Limits and file types

The sizes, counts and file types Biosphere accepts, in one place. When something is over a limit, Biosphere says which limit and what to do instead.

Files you upload to Inbox

These apply to files dropped into Inbox and to Configure → Sources → Files.

  • Each file must be between 1 byte and 25 MiB.
  • Each file can have up to 100 pages, slides or sheets.
  • Biosphere reads PDF files; PNG and JPEG images; documents (DOC, DOCX and RTF); presentations (PPT and PPTX); spreadsheets (XLS and XLSX); CSV and TSV files; JSON and XML files; saved email messages (EML); and plain text.
  • Images can have up to 25 million pixels.
  • CSV, TSV, spreadsheet, JSON and XML files can hold up to 10,000 records. A spreadsheet can have up to 100,000 cells.
  • File names can be up to 200 characters.
  • Every file is scanned for malware before it is read.

For the steps, see Upload files.

Biosphere refuses programs and scripts, generic archives such as ZIP files, password-protected PDFs, macro-enabled or encrypted documents, and documents with external links or embedded objects. A file in any other format is kept and marked Unsupported in Inbox: download it, or upload it again in a supported format.

Email to your inbound address

  • One email can be up to 20 MiB, including its attachments.
  • One email can carry up to 10 attachments. Split larger batches across several emails.
  • The email’s text and each attachment are checked and read like an uploaded file, with the same limits.
  • Attachment names can be up to 200 characters.
  • When an email cannot be split into its parts, the original is still kept for download.

For the steps, see Receive records by email.

  • Encrypted files cannot be read.
