Review what stock cost

Every stock item shows what its stock cost, built from the purchase orders you received. Open Inventory, then Inventory items, and select an item. Open its Cost section.

Read an item’s cost

  • Value on hand is what the stock you still hold cost in USD at saved purchase-date rates.
  • Last receipt is the unit cost of the most recent received purchase.
  • Without a cost counts stock that arrived without a purchase, such as an opening count, and has no recorded unit cost yet. It is never valued at zero.

Biosphere uses first in, first out. Each receipt is a batch at its purchase order price. A sale or a recipe takes the oldest batch first, so the batches table shows what each one cost and how much of it remains.

Margin at current price compares each variant’s price with the cost of the stock on hand. A sold order keeps its own margin; see Review order cost and margin.

Record a unit cost

Stock added without a purchase, such as opening stock or a count gain, needs a unit cost before it can be valued.

  1. Select Record unit cost.
  2. Choose the currency and enter the cost per base unit. Up to six extra decimal places are kept.
  3. Under Applies from, choose the time from which the cost applies. Stock added from that time on uses it until a later cost is recorded.
  4. Enter a reason and select Save unit cost.

For a foreign unit cost, select Review rate on its saved entry and record the effective-date rate. See Review exchange rates.

To change a saved cost, select Correct or void. The original stays in history and every cost that used it updates at once.

What to know

  • Costs are purchase order prices, including any freight or duty spread onto the goods. They are provisional until supplier bills are recorded.
  • Costs are calculated from history every time you look. A corrected receipt, a backdated count or a new unit cost changes past costs immediately.
  • Foreign purchases use their saved purchase-date exchange rate for USD cost. Missing rates keep the dependent value and margin incomplete. Open the linked purchase order to review its rate.
  • Review incomplete costs opens the list of stock whose cost is unknown.
